Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos are three of the most visited places in central Portugal, and they sit close enough together to see in one long day from Lisbon. Here is how far apart they are and the order that works best.
Distances and driving times
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Driving time (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Lisbon → Fátima | 130 km | 1 h 30 – 1 h 40 |
| Fátima → Nazaré | 55 km | 45 min |
| Nazaré → Óbidos | 40 km | 35 min |
| Fátima → Óbidos | 75 km | 55 min |
| Óbidos → Lisbon | 85 km | 1 h – 1 h 15 |
Times are for normal traffic on the A1 and A8 motorways and change on pilgrimage dates and summer weekends.
The best order for one day
Most people find this loop works best: Lisbon → Fátima → Nazaré → Óbidos → Lisbon.
- Fátima in the morning. The Sanctuary is quietest early, and many visitors want to attend a morning Mass. Check the Sanctuary’s Mass schedule before you go.
- Nazaré for lunch. The clifftop Sítio viewpoint, the beach and the fishing town’s seafood restaurants fit naturally into the middle of the day.
- Óbidos in the afternoon. The walled town is at its best in the late light, and from there it is about an hour back to Lisbon.
Driving time adds up to about four and a half hours, so the full loop is a day of roughly 10 to 11 hours door to door.
Doing it by public transport
It is possible but hard to fit into one day. There is no direct train link between the three towns, and coaches between them are infrequent, so you would spend much of the day waiting or changing. Most travellers who try it end up seeing two of the three.
Doing it with a private driver
Our ViaFátima Grand Circuit follows exactly this loop: about 11 hours, pickup from your Lisbon hotel or the airport, from €500 for the whole car with fuel and tolls included. You choose how long to spend at each stop, and the order can change on the day.
Prefer a shorter day? The Fátima pilgrimage day tour is 8 hours from €420 per car, and the Óbidos & Nazaré tour is 9 hours from €390 per car.
Busy dates to know
Fátima is busiest on 12–13 May and 12–13 October, the anniversaries of the first and last apparitions, when roads around the Sanctuary can close. Óbidos fills up during its Chocolate Festival in spring, its Medieval Market in July and its Christmas village in December. Nazaré’s big-wave days in winter draw crowds to the clifftop. Plan an early start on any of these dates.
